Zhongli

"The market is closed and the port has settled. Go get some rest."
Lore Factoid
Zhongli’s title, Vago Mundo, means “To Wander the World” in Latin. It has a double meaning. The first is his retirement as an Archon where he’s free to Wander the streets of Liyue like a mortal. The second is his descent as the dragon Rex Lapis where he Wanders the Human realm.

Zhongli is the 2nd Archon we meet, and the second in incognito. The difference between the Lord of Geo and the Bard of the Wind is that Zhongli plays an active role in his nation as the wise old grandpa willing to lend advice to anyone who lends an ear.

Playstyles

Zhongli is a full defensive and support unit. He provides a shield as durable as the mountains itself capable of absorbing even the strongest of attacks, keeps his team in the fight by negating knockbacks and staggers, and increases their damage by reducing enemy resistances.

Pros
  • Extremely flexible, can work with most any team
  • 100% uptime on Geo resonance
  • Near invincible shield
  • Longest shield duration
  • Universal Elemental RES shred just for being near enemies
  • Prevents knockback and staggers
Cons
  • Low personal damage
  • Geo resonance is only useful for a 2nd Geo DPS
  • Long skill animations
  • Geo is the weakest element
  • Crystallize is useless and can mess up reactions
  • Using the ultimate lowers team DPS most of the time

Materials

Common Drop

Image of slime family common drop material from Genshin Impact Zhongli uses the immensely common slime material as his common drop.

Local Specialty

Image of cor lapis local specialty from Genshin Impact Cor Lapis is Zhongli’s local specialty. Don’t forget to bring a Geo or Claymore character when mining.

Talent Book

Image of gold family talent material from Genshin Impact Zhongli uses the Gold family of Liyue talent books. They’re available Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Normal Boss

Lore Factoid
Guyun Stone Forest is the ancient battlefield where Zhongli defeated and sealed the god Osial underneath stone lances. You can see them protruding from the sea. The Geo Hypostatis was born from the lingering Elemental Energy.

Weekly Boss

Talents

Normal Attack: Rain of Stone

Icon for Zhongli's normal attack in Genshin Impact

Normal Attack: "Performs up to 6 consecutive spear strikes."

Charged Attack: "Consumes a certain amount of Stamina to lunge forward, causing stone spears to fall along his path."

Plunging Attack: "Plunges from mid-air to strike the ground below, damaging opponents along the path and dealing AoE DMG upon impact."

There is nothing special about Zhongli’s Normal Attack. There’s no reason to level them up unless using the Crescent Pike, physical build.

Elemental Skill: Dominus Lapidis

Icon for Zhongli's skill in Genshin Impact"Every mountain, rock and inch of land is filled with the power of Geo, but those who can wield such powers freely are few and far between."

Press

"Commands the power of earth to create a Stone Stele."

The press version only summons a stone stele. This should never be used in battle, and only for exploration to reach higher ground.

Hold

"Causes nearby Geo energy to explode, causing the following effects:
·If their maximum number hasn't been reached, creates a Stone Stele.
·Creates a shield of jade. The shield's DMG Absorption scales based on Zhongli's Max HP."

Zhongli’s hold Skill contains his entire kit. It produces the shield, summons a stone stele, and breaks ores in the overworld. This is honestly the only Talent that should be used in combat, with maybe an Ultimate here or there.

It takes a good second for Zhongli to cross his arms and summon the shield, so be well out of range of enemy attacks before casting. His shield has a crazy 20-second duration with only a 12-second cooldown. There is plenty of time to cycle through the whole team with time to spare.

Zhongli’s Skill is number one to upgrade. It greatly increases the strength of the shield.

Elemental Burst: Planet Befall

Icon for Zhongli's burst in Genshin ImpactEnergy Cost: 40 "Brings a falling meteor down to earth, dealing massive Geo DMG to opponents caught in its AoE and applying the Petrification status to them."
Petrification: Opponents affected by the Petrification status cannot move.

Planet Befall is a decent burst of damage, but the long cast time usually doesn’t justify it. It doesn’t gain extra damage from reactions, the petrification is a low duration and doesn’t work on the most difficult enemies, and the full-support Zhongli build does even less damage.

The benefit is the 40 energy cost, which is the lowest in the game. It’s always ready when wanted without a drop of Energy Recharge.

It’s okay to upgrade this Talent, but don’t go crazy.

Lore Factoid
The shape Planet Befall takes is in the image of the Memory of Dust, which was a gift from Zhongli’s late friend, Guizhong, the Lord of Dust. The real Memory of Dust is seen circling him during his idle animation.

Overall Talent Priority

Skill >> Burst >> Normal

Zhongli has very low Talent upgrade needs. He really only cares about leveling up the Skill, and that’s only for a stronger shield. And there’s no reason to bring it to the top levels if you’re build already has a strong enough shield.

Passive Talents

Arcanum of Crystal

Icon for Zhongli's first passive in Genshin Impact"Refunds 15% of the ore used when crafting Polearm-type weapons."

Arcanum of Crystal is great for new players, but pretty useless for veterans.

Resonant Waves

Icon for Zhongli's second passive in Genshin Impact"When the Jade Shield takes DMG, it will Fortify: ·Fortified characters have 5% increased Shield Strength. Can stack up to 5 times, and lasts until the Jade Shield disappears."

Zhongli’s first passive makes his already strong shield stronger. When it takes damage, it gains more health.

Dominance of Earth

Icon for Zhongli's third passive in Genshin Impact"Zhongli deals bonus DMG based on his Max HP:
·Normal Attack, Charged Attack, and Plunging Attack DMG is increased by 1.39% of Max HP.
·Dominus Lapidis' Stone Stele, resonance, and hold DMG is increased by 1.9% of Max HP.
·Planet Befall's DMG is increased by 33% of Max HP."

Dominance of Earth gives Zhongli an HP scaling on all of his attacks. It allows him to gain some damage while focusing on strengthening his shield. But it’s not enough to turn him into a main or sub DPS.

Rotation

Hold Skill -> Swap

Zhongli should be the first to take action at the start of battle. And, if the battle is initiated by the player, like in domains or some Spiral Abyss floors, you can use his Skill before starting the fight.

A piece of advice: aim Zhongli either backward or sideways to where the enemies spawn. This will position the stone stele out of your way when you rush into battle.

Constellation

Constellation 1: Rock, the Backbone of Earth

Icon for Zhongli's first constellation in Genshin Impact"Increases the maximum number of Stone Steles created by Dominus Lapidis that may exist simultaneously to 2."

Having two stone steles is usually more harmful than good. Two just makes more clutter on the battlefield, and their small range and damage aren’t worth it.

Constellation 2: Stone, the Cradle of Jade

Icon for Zhongli's second constellation in Genshin Impact"Planet Befall grants nearby characters on the field a Jade Shield when it descends."

Stone, the Cradle of Jade is only functional during co-op. It might be the weakest C2 in all of Genshin Impact.

Constellation 3: Jade, Shimmering through Darkness

Icon for Zhongli's third constellation in Genshin Impact"Increases the Level of Dominus Lapidis by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15."

Constellation 4: Topaz, Unbreakable and Fearless

Icon for Zhongli's fourth constellation in Genshin Impact"Increases Planet Befall's AoE by 20% and increases the duration of Planet Befall's Petrification effect by 2s."

Topaz, Unbreakable and Fearless is okay but not for a C4. It increases the petrification by 50% (at max level), for a total of 6 seconds. Which is a reasonably good stun duration. But it’s not worth the opportunity cost of 4 other limited 5*.

Constellation 5: Lazuli, Herald of the Order

Icon for Zhongli's fifth constellation in Genshin Impact"Increases the Level of Planet Befall by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15."

Constellation 6: Chrysos, Bounty of Dominator

Icon for Zhongli's sixth constellation in Genshin Impact"When the Jade Shield takes DMG, 40% of that incoming DMG is converted to HP for the current character. A single instance of regeneration cannot exceed 8% of that character's Max HP."

When Genshin is played correctly, Zhongli’s shield is strong enough to protect the team from all damage. Giving him a heal, especially all the way at C6, brings no benefit.

Constellation Final Thoughts

Zhongli probably has the weakest Constellation track in all of Genshin, which is good and bad. It’s good for C0 players, as their Zhongli will be at 99% max potential. But bad for those who love the character and want to make him stronger with extreme-investment.

Weapons

Symbol for 5 star rarity in Genshin Impact 5* Weapons

Image of the weapon NAME from Genshin ImpactVortex Vanquisher

Base ATK: 608
Sub Stat: ATK 49.6%

Golden Majesty: (R1) "Increases Shield Strength by 20%. Scoring hits on opponents increases ATK by 4% for 8s. Max 5 stacks. Can only occur once every 0.3s. While protected by a shield, this ATK increase effect is increased by 100%."

Zhongli doesn’t have great weapon options. Most of them only increase his already low personal damage a little bit or he just doesn’t synergize well with them.

That being said, it lowers he weapon dependence to them being nothing more than simple stat sticks.

Vortex Vanquisher is his signature and best 5* option. The extra shield strength is okay but not usually needed. And the Atk% increase doesn’t synergize well with his HP scaling. Luckily, it looks amazing on him.

Lore Factoid
Vortex Vanquisher is from the perspective of sailors recounting the legends of Rex Lapis fighting against vengeful gods of the sea, like Osial.

Icon for 5 star rarity in Genshin ImpactSymbol for 4 star rarity in Genshin Impact4* Weapons

Image of the weapon NAME from Genshin ImpactRightful Reward

Base ATK: 565
Sub Stat: HP 27.6%

Tip of the Spear: (R5) "When the wielder is healed, restore 16 Energy. This effect can be triggered once every 10s, and can occur even when the character is not on the field."

Rightful Reward is the only HP substat polearm. If you want a stronger shield, this is the best option. Unfortunately, Zhongli will rarely need healing nor does he care about extra energy.

Image of the weapon NAME from Genshin ImpactDeathmatch

Base ATK: 454
Sub Stat: Crit Rate 36.8%

Gladiator: (R5) "If there are at least 2 opponents nearby, ATK is increased by 32% and DEF is increased by 32%. If there are fewer than 2 opponents nearby, ATK is increased by 48%."

Deathmatch is the best 4* weapon to increase Zhongli’s personal damage. But it’s locked behind the the battlepass.

Image of the weapon NAME from Genshin ImpactFavonius Lance

Base ATK: 565
Sub Stat: Energy Recharge 30.6%

Windfall: (R5) "CRIT Hits have a 100% chance to generate a small amount of Elemental Particles, which will regenerate 6 Energy for the character. Can only occur once every 6s."

Favonius Lance is Zhongli’s best support polearm. He can provide a decent amount of energy to his team, but he now needs high Crit Rate. He also doesn’t care about the energy or Energy Recharge himself.

Image of the weapon NAME from Genshin ImpactCrescent Pike

Base ATK: 565
Sub Stat: Physical DMG 34.5%

Infusion Needle: (R5) "After picking up an Elemental Orb/Particle, Normal and Charged Attacks deal additional DMG equal to 40% of ATK for 5s."

Crescent Pike is a notable option for those who want to build an on-field Zhongli. The extra 40% damage ticks on every hit, and Zhongli has a lot of multi-hits within his normal attack string.

The downsides are he’ll need to be built with Atk over Hp, making his shield much weaker, and it’s physical damage.

Artifacts

Desired Stats

Icon for the Sands of Eon artifact slot in Genshin ImpactSands of Eon

HP% > ATK%

Use HP sands. If using the Crescent Pike build, Atk could be substituted.

Icon for the Goblet of Eonothem artifact slot in Genshin ImpactGoblet of Eonothem

HP% > Geo DMG% > ATK%

HP goblet is the best option for Zhongli’s traditional build.

If you find his shield strong enough already, you could swap it out for a Geo Dmg% for some extra personal damage.

And if using the Crescent Pike build, Atk is preferred.

Icon for the Circlet of Logos artifact slot in Genshin ImpactCirclet of Logos

HP% > Crit Rate% > ATK%

Like the other pieces, HP is the best option.

If using Favonius Lance, consider using Crit Rate to have more reliable energy production.

And if using the Crescent Pike build, Atk is an option, but Crit Rate will usually be better.

Sub Stats

HP% > Crit Rate% > ATK% > Crit Dmg%

Vanilla Zhongli is extremely easy to build. He only cares about HP subs to make his shield stronger.

If you have a damaging weapon like Deathmatch or Vortex Vanquisher, pick up some Crit Rate and Crit Dmg to increase his personal damage.

If you’re using the Favonius Lance, aim for as much Crit Rate as possible.

And finally, if using Crescent Pike for the on-field build, find a good balance between Atk, Crit Rate, Crit Dmg, and HP.

Tenacity of the Millelith

Icon for the NAME artifact set in Genshin Impact2-Pieces: "HP +20%"
4-Pieces: "When an Elemental Skill hits an opponent, the ATK of all nearby party members is increased by 20% and their Shield Strength is increased by 30% for 3s. This effect can be triggered once every 0.5s. This effect can still be triggered even when the character who is using this artifact set is not on the field."

Tenacity of the Millelith is support Zhongli’s best set. It gives him extra HP and he’s able to consistently trigger the Atk bonus with the stone stele. Regrettably, the stone stele has such a small range that you’ll have to fight fairly close to it to keep the buff up.

Archaic Petra

Icon for the NAME artifact set in Genshin Impact2-Pieces: "Gain a 15% Geo DMG Bonus."
4-Pieces: "Upon obtaining an Elemental Shard created through a Crystallize Reaction, all party members gain a 35% DMG Bonus for that particular element for 10s. Only one form of Elemental DMG Bonus can be gained in this manner at any one time."

Archaic Petra is an interesting relic set for mono-teams. Archaic Petra Zhongli can’t be slotted into any team as easily as Tenacity of the Millelith, but the 35% DMG Bonus is well worth it.

Bloodstained Chivalry

Icon for the NAME artifact set in Genshin Impact2-Pieces: "Physical DMG +25%"
4-Pieces: "After defeating an opponent, increases Charged Attack DMG by 50%, and reduces its Stamina cost to 0 for 10s."

Bloodstained Chivalry is the best set for Crescent Pike build Zhongli.

Teammates

Any Team

Zhongli is an incredibly flexible unit that can fill both the defensive and damage-increasing slot in a team. There aren’t many teams Zhongli doesn’t work with.

Low HP Teams

Teams that either constantly drain HP or prefer to stay at lower health love Zhongli. He’s able to protect them while not diminishing their buffs.

Some great teammates are Hu Tao, Xiao, Lyney, and possibly many future Fontaine characters if the HP drain mechanic trend continues.

Archaic Petra

An Archaic Petra team is one that revolves around Zhongli producing a crystallize of the element of at least two DPS team members. And a final fourth unit that doesn’t react with Geo like Anemo, Dendro, or another Geo.

Physical Zhongli

Physical Zhongli teams aim to maximize his personal damage with the Crescent Pike build. He fulfills the defensive slot as well, so the remaining team members are either off-field DPS or buffers.
